TALAVYA

Percussion ensemble Tālavya brings tabla to the center stage, distilling its age-old spirit and practice into a high-energy performance.  Composed by Pandit Divyang Vakil, the ensemble plays with the passion and power along with the sophistication and subtlety.  The quartet moves between rousing peaks and smooth meditative passages, expressing the various emotions of tabla.  With its blend of solos, duos and group compositions, the audience experiences each artist’s unique personality as they play complex rhythmic patterns with split-second perfection. TAAN

Taan Indian World MusicA harmonious meeting of seemingly opposites, a meeting of east and west, ancient and modern, melody and harmony, Taan is an indo-world fusion group composed by Rushi Vakil, son of Pandit Divyang Vakil.  Each track is different from the rest.  In one, you find Irish fiddling with Goan folk, while another compares jazz with the classical raga of Bhairavi.  There are club beats overlaid with tabla vocals and a Ugandan folk song recreated with Indian improvisation techniques. Appealing to today’s generation and the connoisseurs of music, Taan has audiences snapping their fingers, dancing to the beat and swaying to its sound.  Listen to Taan here.

JIN WON

Jin performing Kathak danceAcclaimed kathak dancer Jin Won is a perfect example of the universal appeal of Indian classical arts. A native of Seoul, South Korea, Jin is a dynamic artist who infuses her own creativity into her performance.  A strong, yet graceful performer, her dance recital incorporates both traditional and contemporary forms of the Indian classical dance kathak.  With her dual training in classical dance and music (tabla), her understanding of rhythm adds depth to her dance performance.  Her chakars (spins) enthrall audiences and her padhant (oral recitation) leaves people in awe of the ease with which she recites such complex and foreign words.  Learn more about Jin at www.jinkathak.com
