SHYAM is 14 years old and has been playing tabla for 5 years. He lives in Easton, PA and began learning tabla in Ahmedabad, India with a senior student of Guruji. He then took lessons in America, first with Taalim’s Loren Oppenheimer, and then with Mike Lukshis. He is also a black belt in karate and very interested in basketball and other sports. He learns with his sister, Aesha; both of his parents, Amit bhai and Varda ben, are also very involved with Hindustani classical music.

Shyam will be performing in this years Spring Fundraiser Recital. As a participant in the Pledge-For-Practice donation drive, he will be raising money for underprivileged tabla students in India by collecting sponsors to pledge money for each hour he practices. Shyam has pledged 50 hours in 45 days and he is on course to make that mark!

Here’s a few words from Shyam:
“I never thought practice helped, I thought it was just something we were told to do.  I never saw the results I wanted and I got frustrated and I wouldn’t practice. But once I sat down and did good, solid practice I did see the results I wanted to see.  So in the end practice does help even if you get frustrated, try your hardest and you may achieve what you wanted.”
