Congratulations to our April Student of the Month – 13 year old tabla student Nikhil Rao!

Thirteen year old Nikhil Rao has been taking tabla lessons for one year at the Taalim School, formerly with Kaumil Shah and now with Mike Lukshis at our Piscataway location.

Nikhil got interested in tabla when he attended a concert by Ustad Zakir Hussain. “I was inspired by the music and I wanted to play the instrument that gave such energy and rhythm to Indian music.”

In the last year, he had dived head-on into his tabla training, attending Taalim’s summer camp and participating in our recently concluded Pledge for Practice. When asked why he enjoy tabla, his reply is:

“I like playing the Tabla because I love music. I listen to music from all around the world – African, Latin, French, American, and of course Indian music. Learning and playing the tabla gives me enjoyment and a feeling of being connected to my Indian heritage.”

When asked about Nikhil as a student, his teachers say “Nikhil is focused and has a calm attitude towards his training and that is reflected in the steadiness of playing.”

Watch Nikhil’s video below (from his performance at our Pledge for Practice recital) and don’t forget to leave a comment to encourage this young man.
